Whether working on a series about Hawaiian petroglyphs, Tai Chi, or abstract oils, Sue Nash hopes her work will evoke meaning for the viewer. “My work began out of frustration with the written and spoken word. I had been a teacher, legal assistant, historian and I had even written a novel. I had a vision that I wanted to share with others. It wasn’t until my first printmaking teacher Julie Schoenecker gave me the tools for making art that I realized my best form of communicating was visual art,” Sue says. She began to explore the way we communicate through symbols. “I found a wealth of information about symbols and dreams. I began going to life drawing and teaching art appreciation which forced me to study aesthetics. I continued to explore Hawaiian petroglyphs through my art.”
"What those petroglyphs taught me was to rejoice in being human. As humans we reflect on and interpret the world around us; the world of the people we love, our animal friends, and all of nature." Today she continues to use printmaking and painting to celebrate the human form. Her art has a simple, unstudied quality that has broad appeal.
